How To Get Started

Why is a builder the first person you should talk to when embarking on your home renovation or extension project?

At IJM Construction we have spent the last 12 years building a team of the best tradies in Hawke’s Bay. Your project will likely require Electricians, Plumbers, Painters, Tilers and more! If one of these trade groups doesn’t do a good job it can spoil the whole project.

We have a team that prices their work honestly, are the best in the Bay at their trade, have reliable teams that turn up when we need them, and lastly we work together as a team. If we encounter a problem, everyone chips in to resolve the issue, rather than playing the blame game.

Our subtrades know that we are on this job together today and we will be on the next job together tomorrow, so we all do our best for the client, and each other.

At IJM Construction we regard being invited into your space to carry out renovation work as a privilege. And as such we make sure our teams are tidy (no empty energy cans left around the room!), use appropriate language, are polite and thoughtful. We also choose sub trades to work with who share our same values.

Can you use your own preferred subtrade? You might have a brother who is an electrician, or a plumber that’s done work on your house before, so knows it well. The short answer is yes, you can request your own subtrade. However, my advice is proceed with caution. If your reason is valid and it’s really important to you to bring in your own sub trade, we will make them feel part of the team, we will make it work. But it does carry a higher level of risk that things don’t go as smoothly as they could, with a well curated team that knows each other well.

At IJM we also have a large network of trades to call on. Even businesses in the same trade can offer slightly different levels of service in different areas – think cost, quality, speed, resources, locations based etc. We hand pick the trades who we believe are the best fit for you and your project.

We want to make this easy! When you have a builder that you trust to make great decisions that are in your best interest, you get to sit back and let us do the leg work. We want you to focus on the important decisions, like choosing beautiful carpet, your lighting plan, colours that make you feel happy inside, beautiful tapware and tiles. Your house will look just how you want it, with none of the stress and emotional drain of wondering if you have the right team for the job.

When I built my first home 8 years ago, it was beautiful. However the tiler we used was new to town. His price was great, he was available to our timeline, so we hired him. Unfortunately he made major errors with his finishing work, and I fixated on it! The grout lines that weren’t even, the tile trim that didn’t line up in the corners, the big gaps that had been filled with silicone. This really ruined my love for the house we worked so hard to create. Over the last 12 years we have built a trusted network that we are so proud to work alongside and we know they will make your project one that you love completely.

We’ll discuss your goals, budget expectations, and the best path forward based on your situation.

2. Site Visit & Planning

We assess your existing home and identify any structural, design, or access considerations that may impact the project.

If required, we can help coordinate design concepts, consultants, and planning.

During this stage we focus on:

  • Functionality and layout
  • Budget alignment
  • Council requirements
  • Structural considerations
  • Material selections
  • Long-term value

3. Pricing & Scope Of Work

We prepare a detailed proposal outlining the scope of work, specifications, estimated timelines, and pricing.

Transparency matters to us. We want you to understand exactly what’s included before construction starts.

4. Construction

Once everything is approved, construction begins.

We manage the project from start to finish and keep you updated throughout the build process.

We understand renovations can disrupt everyday life, so we focus on maintaining a clean, organised, and respectful worksite wherever possible.
